How far we’ve come to see modest fashion designers more consistently than ever at New York Fashion Week. Now it feels like every season we’re laying our eyes on a new breakout star from a lush faraway country with a culture so rich in its own fashion history, we wonder why they haven’t been in our lives sooner?

Qatari dynamic duo and designers Harlienz and Ghada Albuainain are just a couple of the trailblazers making their way over. They presented their collaborative fall collections for the first time on the main NYFW schedule; a series of muted and jewel-toned silks and linens adorned with handmade jewelry floated down the runway. The looks embodied the richness of Middle Eastern fashion, inspiring images of golden sunsets and warm spice-tinged breezes across hot landscapes. While most of the looks remained true to traditional Arab silhouettes (think abayas and kaftans topped with stylishly draped hijabs), there were a few options that offered modern touches of asymmetrical shapes and cutouts. Ghada’s gold and diamond encrusted jewels were the perfect touch of opulence against the lux fabrics.

The designers’ relationship is apparent throughout the collection; in the way they married their individual styles and tastes to conceive a successful debut collection.
